Shawn - the Mouse
by Hari Parasu
A story
Hobbies: Reading, Writing, Karate

There was a mouse named Shawn and he and his colony of mice lived in the woods. They had a myriad of little passageways and tunnels underground which connected them and the neighborhood together. Shawn chattered and squeaked with his friend about something, and then scampered off down the passage, turned to the left, and whisked away down a hole into a house. He peered out of the hidden hole, and saw black cats prowling around outside. Shawn squeaked and was away down the hole. He swerved and continued to bolt down the tunnel.

Shawn was the kind of mouse called a House Mouse.

He stopped and sniffed the air. Some musty smell hung about the tunnel here, and only one other mouse peeked out of the tunnel hole at the other end. Shawn scuttled over to see what the mouse was looking at. The mouse squeaked once, and scampered off down the dark, damp, musty tunnel.

Shawn climbed through the hole and sniffed once more. The musty smell was gone, but was replaced with a rather...well , stinky smell. This was the smell of human to the mouse.

Shawn bounded on a long journey through the heart of the forest. The only time he had encountered a predator, a fox which had sniffed out his presence. Shawn zigzagged in 10-inch leaps through the forest.

Then he came to a house. This was the house of a farmer, and of course, it had a barn. Now Shawn boldly streaked right into the barn.

He found a hole in the wall and made a neat tidy little nest in it. Then, being monstrously hungry, he left off from making the nest and came out into the barn.

Shawn scuttled over to a large sack full of grain. MUNCH! CRUNCH! CRACK! Shawn munched grain for a while, then went to investigate two more sacks filled to the brim with stashes of water chesnut and soap. Shawn stored a pile of grain, a bar of soap, and a tiny stash of water chesnuts away in his storage hole.

Suddenly, there was a scuffling noise outside that Shawn knew well. The sound of an intruder! Shawn leaped out of the hole and confronted the stranger. The other mouse bolted, but Shawn got in front of it. The intruder stood up on its hind legs and squeaked, saying, "I dare you to attack me!" Shawn leaped on top of the strange mouse, and bit it. The other one squealed and wrestled free. Shawn and the mouse circled around each other like boxers. Shawn shot a paw out and boxed the strange mouse's stomach.

EEP! The mouse scampered across the barn floor and scrambled into another hole in the wall.

Shawn sighed contentedly. About time, too. Shawn sensed something was not right here.
