A Day in the Life of a Balloon
by Lakshmi Kumararajah
It was a gas balloon. Its story goes like this. A small girl aged 5 had fancied the gas balloon, which the man on the cycle was selling. She had got it from her mom who had bought it for her. But the small girl had let it go accidentally. Being a gas balloon it had flown upwards. It went high and high and high.

It flew above the pub. There was a brawl going on inside the pub. Only if the balloon had been human, it would have gone inside to see what was happening, for they were making such a huge noise. The gas balloon passed the pub and was above a school now. It was playtime in the school and the children were making a lot of noise playing their games. If the balloon had any sense it would have joined them in play for the children seemed to be having a lot of fun.

It was a beautiful sight to see the balloon flying freely in the sky. Its color was blue. It was in a oval shape as most normal balloons are. If the girl had not lost her balloon, it would have been safely flying inside the house of the girl. But now it could be seen by everyone and commented upon. Especially all the small children wanted the balloon for themselves!

It also flew over the beach, but it didn't fly over the waters. It was flying over the shores.

At last the balloon came over the park. There were a lot of people. Some were pointing at the balloon and saying something. The balloon's freedom was cut short by a tree; it got stuck to the tree.

As a few hours passed by, the gas inside the balloon started to come out and it fell to the ground limp. Its fate was to be put into the waste paper bin by the man who cleaned the park.

If it hadn't passed the park and gotten stuck to the tree, it would have seen much more places, many interesting places. But the balloon was lifeless and could only be seen and not see. But it provided entertainment, for the children at school, people at the park and beach and so it did some good.
