The Helpful Animals
by Ananya S Guha

Once upon a time there was a young man who was badly in need of money. He consulted an old man (who was known as a very wise man) and asked him how he could get money since all his business had failed. The old man clapped his hands thrice and a young boy about the age of 13 came running there. The old man talked quickly to him and he gave the young man a bundle of coins.

Unfortunately for the young man whose name was Shyam, dacoits robbed him while he was passing through a dense forest. He had to give up his money his jewels, his clothes and his bundle of precious gems. Poor Shyam now wandered through the forests with the clothes of a shepherd boy. He also carried his food in a bundle. As he passed through the forest he saw that many animals were suffering due to lack of food because of a recent forest fire. He became good friends with the animals there.

As he was passing he heard the loud braying of a donkey that was the signal for all the animals to assemble under a tree. The lions voice echoed around the forest.

The elephant that had brought Ram to the tree put him down.

The lion asked Shyam ”who are you stranger?”

Shyam informed him about all the incidents that had occurred.

The lion said ”Shyam, a hunter was once attacked. He rushed away leaving his whole bundle of money behind. I have hid it in my cave fearing other humans would come once they saw the money. Since you need it very much I am giving it to you.”

Shyam was full of gratitude when he heard this. He in return promised to supply food to the forest.

Shyam returned home and made good use of the money. And of course he never forgot the animals that had helped him to now live in luxury.
