Stag Beetles and Ants
by Aryan Java Williams
I am a small boy and I live in Takao village in Japan. It has many mountains and farmlands around it. Since this place has lots of food it has lots of insects, birds and animals. Once I had two stag beetles that somebody gave me. One was very big and I called him Yuki or power. The small one was called Takaaki which means child of Taaka. But when I gave them Konchu jelly to eat, black and red ants started coming. They ate up all the jelly. So I asked my friend Terusan what I should do. She told me to cut big pieces of cucumber and dip them in jelly and place them in the stag beetle box. Then the ants would not come.

I tried this method but again ants started coming. The stag beetles became angry. Then they opened the cover of the insect box with their antenna and flew away to the persimmon tree. I was feeling angry with the ants as they did a bad thing and did not say sorry to the stag beetles.

I was missing my stag beetles and thinking when they would come back. Finally one day I went to the house of my neighbor who gave me two female stag beetles and two male stag beetles. I was very happy. I named the first female stag beetle, Haruka and the second Hikari. The first male stag beetle I called Daiki as he was big and the second one I called Haruki as he was small. But the problem with the red ants remained.

One day I discovered that sprinkling some talcum powder around the box made the ants run away. So I put some power around the stag beetle box. Surely the next day the ants did not come back. Afterward the stag beetles thanked me. I played with my stag beetles without any trouble.
