Vampire Bats
by Aniket Kumar
  • In spite of their name, sea cucumbers are animals from the same family as sea urchins and starfish. In fact, they're more like giant leathery slugs than something to put in a salad.
  • Vampire bats are the only mammals that feed exclusively on blood. The three species are all found in Central and South America.
  • The Hatchet fish gets its name because its deep body is shaped a bit like a small axe, or hatchet. These tiny fish are no bigger than 10cm. They have silver-colored bodies, and their shiny sides reflect light from the surface.
  • The European Black Slugs have been in the British Isles since the end of the Ice Age. They belong to a group of animals called mollusks. Slugs are classed as gastropods, which means 'belly-foot', because they move along using the flat, muscular 'foot' on the base of their bodies.

The male of the beautiful species of Narwhal whale is unique, and unlikely to be confused with any other type of whale. The word 'narwhal' comes from the Old Norse meaning 'corpse whale' since its white color resembles that of a floating corpse! Narwhals are found in the icy waters of the Arctic. They are rarely seen, and very little is known of their behavior in the wild.
