The Mango Tree
by Triveni Goswami

I’m standing alone in this village. I’ve seen all the changes in the village life. I’ve seen how they came and settled, how generations lived here, how new machines came and how people deserted me and the village.

First Rajam and his family, then Rohini and her children and then slowly and gradually everyone started moving away. They started moving for a better life. But no one thought of me. They didn’t think how would I feel or how would my dear friend village would feel.

Today is my 100th birthday.

My memory has fainted.

But I remember the good old days when my delicious mangoes were everybody’s favorite. Reema used to request her mother for picking my mangoes, Raju Kaka and other used to talk beneath my shelter. The children used to run, scream and play and when they were tired they used to have my mangoes.

Though now this village is deserted but I do strongly believe that one day the villagers will come back and start living here once again. Then the village will be filled with the joyous voices of the children playing and the village will wear a festive look once again.
