Bulbuli's Bamboo - An Interesting Book To Read
by Ananya S Guha
Have you read any book written for you on bamboos? If you haven't please read the book by Mita Bordoloi "Bulbuli's Bamboo". It is set perhaps in Kaziranga where the author spent her childhood.

Kaziranga is surrounded by bamboos making the scenery very green. It is this nostalgia with her childhood which perhaps prompted the author to write this book.

The book revolves around a character, a young girl by the name of Bulbuli. Though the book is written in verse form, it tells a story, in fact many many stories of Bulbuli and her bamboo world.

Bamboo world, I said - curious to know what this means? It means that Bulbuli lives in the environment of bamboos at once natural and Eco-friendly. In fact she lives bamboo, eats bamboo and even drinks bamboo. She eats bamboo shoots, and she drinks soup made out of them. Her house, her furniture are all made of bamboo. And when she steps out from her house into the outside world she is greeted with bamboo trees, forests and groves. She even has to cross a bamboo bridge.

This is little Bulbuli's bamboo world. Interesting isn't it how the author creates a quiet world of bamboos, away from the dense madding crowd?

Bulbuli's world is a quiet one, and the habitat, the surroundings are of bamboos.

What a lovely little story, and each page has a sketch so that we get to know what Bulbuli is up to-waking, walking, sleeping and dreaming.

The moral of the story is that bamboos can be used for practical purposes and they can also lend grace and beauty to natural surroundings. Bamboos can be used for livelihood, for making furniture, for eating and even drinking soup. So in this quiet world of bamboos Bulbuli a little girl aged ten or eleven works out her daily life, like you and me.

The story begins with Bulbuli waking up in the morning, and ends with her sleeping and dreaming her bamboo dreams- the cycle of life.

You must read this story, it is poetry as well, and very musical. It has been published by Tulika Publishers of Chennai, in 2012. The illustrations which add colour to the story are done by Proiti Roy.

Lastly, another interesting thing about the story is that it is a combination of a story and a poem or a series of poems. Read the book to discover that!
