Jhumru’s World
by Ananya Prasad

On the banks of a river there was a village.  A doe from a nearby jungle used to visit the village. The villagers made her their friend and loved it. They called her Jhumru.

The jungle was ruled by a king called Sher Singh. He killed the animals for food. The deer of the forest also attracted him as they were very meek. Their meat filled his stomach. He always had an eye on Jhumru.

Jhumru with her naughtiness attracted the villagers and also left Sher Singh swinging in joy because she was his future food. Slowly, Sher Singh started becoming impatient. But Jhumru was intelligent and understood Sher Singh’s plans. Sher Singh could not compete with her speed and intelligence. Sher Singh was planning and waiting for a chance to cheat her.

Jhumru became pregnant. But she went to meet the villagers. One day she went to the village and gave birth to a fawn. The villagers named the baby-deer Kushi. They loved Kushi and got attached to her. They played with her.  Jhumru wanted to take Kushi to the jungle so that it would grow up with the other deer in the forest.

Sher Singh one day decided to search for Jhumru. He reached the village and attacked the village. The villagers were united and saved Jhumru and her baby Kushi. They lost much of their property and many huts were damaged. But they loved Jhumru and Kushi more than they loved their property.

Jhumru’s heart was filled with guilt. She felt that she was the culprit. She decided to return to the jungle along with Kushi so that the villagers would be safe. When the villagers knew this, they tried to stop her. They told her that the village was the safest place for them to live.

In spite of their feelings for her and Kushi, Jhumru started leaving for the jungle along with Kushi without waiting for their permission. The villagers were disappointed to know about her behavior but they still went till the outskirts with the deer to see them off. Jhumru understood the unselfish love of the villagers. She could not pretend to be angry anymore.

Her voice was filled with sadness and she told them “As long as I am alive, I will be tied to your love and friendship. But, I am not selfish. I cannot sacrifice your lives for ours. So we have to leave. That is the only solution.”

Jhumru entered the jungle with Kushi. Sher Singh was ready to attack Jhumru. Suddenly, a tiger couple came and disturbed Sher Singh’s plan. He lost his prey. The tiger couple was friendly and they wanted to save Jhumru and Kushi. They also promised to protect Jhumru and Kushi for the rest of their lives. They also wanted to defeat Sher Singh by protecting Jhumru and Kushi.

From that day onwards, Jhumru and Kushi lived happily ever after.
