The Lone Survivor
by Amogha Varsha

It was midnight. Alpha platoon were conducting a combing operation. Their leader was Lieutenant Mike Rodriguez. Chris Taylor was their newest recruit in the platoon. It was a new experience for him. He had befriended Captain Daniel Macpherson, private Tom Morrison and private first–class Tim Craig. They were in the dangerous area of the Vietcong.

As they moved forward they heard gunshots. Sargent Ryan Barnes was shot in the head. A lot of firing took place in the jungle. Lieutenant shouted “We are cornered by the Vietcong. Guys please do not panic, wait till these chickens run away then we will counter attack them.”

Dawn broke. Lieutenant realized that the soldiers had dozed off and the lieutenant was in a position where he could not observe the enemy position. Taking the advantage the Vietcong laid booby traps for them.

Mike scolded them for being irresponsible and said, “We are all clear, let’s move out carefully.” As they moved along Chris asked Tim “Is this the case every day.”

Tim replied mournfully “yes this is the case. The Vietcong’s are notorious rebels who want to make north Vietnam a country. When I had joined one month ago there were 54 soldiers now there are only 24, 30 dead in the line of duty. This is the bad, bloody story of the Vietnam jungles.

Their movement was brought to a halt when private Deshea stepped on a booby trap that was laid in the midnight by the Vietcongs. Well, they had to pay the price. The booby trap exploded and killed many soldiers on duty including Daniel, Tim and Tom. The lone soldier who survived was Chris Taylor. He was in another orbit. His world was destroyed in a split second. His best buddies, his platoon were no more. He cried and cried when he saw his platoons dead and bodies being shown to him. His condition was also critical. The United States of America had come to treat him. Finally he recovered and was awarded the survivor merit medal.  He was hailed as a war hero by the USA public.

But there was something sad about all these things happening. He was disturbed a lot by all the activities happening around him. He asked his boss colonel Daniel Smith to post him back to the Vietnam jungles. His boss was stunned by his request.

He asked “Why do you want to go back to hell?”

He replied back “What you all call hell is my home.”  Stunned by his defiance he was posted back to Vietnam. But sadly he was hit by a stray bullet in the war. All the soldiers surrounded him and said “Sir, we are sorry.” But Chris replied back “Don’t be sorry, friends. I am very happy that I am going to heaven to meet my mates.” These were the last words of private Chris Taylor as the lone survivor of the alpha platoon died satisfied.
