Irresistible, Charming And Priceless
by Ramendra Kumar

‘A book that is titled “On the Tip of a Pin was ... ” has to be different, if not anything else,’ I thought, as I picked it up. But I was wrong. Interesting would be a gross understatement - delicious, enchanting, irresistible and scrumptious would describe it better.

It is tale of a town called Pintipur which is on the tip of a tiny pin. In the town lived 20 children, men and women and Lion Pig, Cow, Goat and Worm. Each of the animals had it foibles and indulged in peccadilloes, but it was the worm which was the biggest problem.

She was the best underground dancer in the world and made ‘the longest, deepest, straightest holes… across the village and over the moon and the stars and the sun and the clouds’. She would disappear for many days and just when everyone was getting used to ‘wormless days’ she would turn up like an incorrigible worm that she was!

Well, did the worm continue being a bother for the citizens of Pintipur? No, of course not. She soon became the ‘maze-ing, amazing’ worm who was welcomed back to Pintipur. How did the miracle happen? How did the children discover the fun and excitement of wormholes? How did the kids actually end up exploring amazing new worlds and thanking the worm for it? Read this peach of a book to find out.

The book tingles and tickles with its words, captivates and enthralls with its illustrations. Every line reaches out not only with its meaning but also with its cute and naughty shape, size and loop. The pictures complement the text beautifully to create a collage of fun and fantasy, charm and magic.

The book has been written by well known editor and writer Geeta Dharmarajan who has 17 books and more than 400 published pieces to her credit. Ludmilla Chakrabarty, artist and writer, has done the artwork. It has been published by Katha, a nonprofit organisation working with and in story and storytelling, since 1988. It is one of India’s top publishing houses.

Normally when I write a review I mention the age group for which the book is suitable. In this case I am not taking the liberty. This delectable book, like an Asterix Comic or chocolate ice-cream is for all ages, moods and minds. And as for the price – well, it’s Priceless!
