The Clever Rabbit
by K. Amoghavarsha

It was a lovely sunny morning in the forest of Ranathambore, Cheeku stretched his body and yawned.

You don’t know who is Cheeku?  Well, let me tell you. He is a small rabbit who is very mischievous and never listens to his parents.

"Cheeku, we are going to your Aunt’s place please stay inside the house and do not venture out in any eventuality," Mom and dad told Cheeku before leaving their house.

So Cheeku was alone in the house. His mom warned him not to go out of the house and do any mischief. Cheeku had agreed reluctantly. But he still wanted to go out and play with his best friend Meeku. So he went to Meeku’s house. They talked a bit and went out to play hide and seek. This time it was Cheeku’s turn to search. He soon found that Meeku wasn’t nearby. So he went far off his house to search for Meeku. While going he felt hungry. Suddenly he saw a bunch of carrots lying nearby .This made him very happy. He thought, “How tasty these carrots are. I should surely eat them.” When he bent down to pick up the carrots suddenly something tightened around his neck. Oh! It was a trap which was laid by Dungi, the cruel wolf. Dungi said to himself "What a tasty catch I have got today, it would be heavenly to eat such a tender rabbit”.

Cheeku was terrified but gathered up his wits and mustered some courage and spoke "Salaam Dungi sahib!”

Dungi looked surprised. “How do you know my name," he asked. “In this Jungle who does not know about Dungi, the great wolf. Thank  God that I am going to be the lunch of the great Dungi” Cheeku replied. Dungi was happy after listening to this.

Cheeku continued "Oh great lord you are the greatest of all, the mightiest of all, and the wisest of all."  But all of a sudden Cheeku started coughing. Dungi asked what happened to him. Cheeku said that the trap was too tight and it was choking his throat, therefore he was unable to speak. Dungi who wanted to listen to his praises opened the trap. It was just a small trick by Cheeku to fool Dungi. As soon as the trap was open Cheeku ran as fast as he could and reached his house. He had decided that he would tell his parents regarding the horrifying incident. After sometime when his mom and dad came back home, he told them the story and promised them that he would listen to them and never venture out alone.

Poor Dungi was last seen eating carrots left by Cheeku, cursing his luck and Cheeku in equal measure. From that day onwards everybody called him "Clever Cheeku” and his parents were very proud of him. Cheeku became the hero of his group and  lived happily thereafter.
