Creativity Unplugged
by Ramendra Kumar

“When I saw the tall and majestic trees in Ooty, I felt as if their leaves and branches were receiving messages from God.” This statement of  a 13 year old girl  provides a delectable flavor of the Creative Writing and Illustration Workshop held at  Kendriya Vidyalaya, Megahataburu on 11th and 12th February, 2011

The Workshop was organized by Kiriburu-Megahataburu Iron Ore Mines, RMD, SAIL under the aegis of National Book Trust, India (NBT). Various schools of the region participated in the event which was the first of its kind.

70 young and vibrant minds, five enthusiastic mentors and an energetic team of organizers – it couldn’t get better than this. Mr. Manas Ranjan Mohapatra, Mr. Ramendra Kumar and Mrs. Sailabala Mohapatra – the mentors, whose forte was writing, gave the students tips on various forms of creative writing.  The repertoire included short stories, travelogues, memoirs, poetry et al. The two artists Mr. Arun Pallur and Mr. Vijay Mallik provided guidance on the art and craft of creating illustrations. It was then the time to create a symphony of inspiration. The nascent writers and artists got together to weave a gossamer fabric of words and colors. Their first tryst with creativity was analyzed by the mentors. Suggestions were given and the output gently honed and shaped. The budding stars went back and chiseled their work.

The result of all the honing was a brilliant collage of creativity unplugged. The writers let their imagination soar - writing travel tales, legends, short stories and poems on myriad themes. The young artists complemented the words with deft lines and colors. The outcome was a synergy that was truly magical.

As far as the organizing was concerned everything went in a clockwork fashion. The inaugural function saw the dignitaries inspiring the students with their words of wisdom, wit, empathy and affection. In the concluding function the mentors gave their feedback on the output of the workshop and expressed their happiness at the brilliance of the budding stars.

The real heroes of the workshop of course were the pure hearts and ignited minds that created a montage of words and values, ideas and images making the Workshop an event to remember!
